Worcestershire Senior Cup - Monday, 30th October, 2000

Worcester City 4 Halesowen Town 1

Worcester, still smarting from a five goal F.A. Cup defeat on Saturday, took a 13th minute lead when Carl Heeley’s header from Mike Wyatt’s left-side freekick was blocked but the ball fell kindly for Mark Owen to place the ball beyond Andy Quy in the Halesowen goal. Halesowen were back on terms in the 22nd minute when Heeley brought down makeshift centre-forward Ross Collins in front of goal and Les Hines stepped up to crash the resulting penalty into the centre of the net.

In an end-to-end first half encounter Mason made a delightful left wing run on the half hour and crossed for Collins to side-foot a volley which was clawed away for a corner by former Yeltz goalkeeper Danny McDonnell. At the other end, Quy made an acrobatic save from a Steve Lutz header and then on the stroke of half-time Mason made another tricky left-wing run for the visitors to force a fine save from McDonnell.

Worcester increased the pressure at the start of the second period with Quy blocking an Ian Reed shot leaving Andy Comyn to complete a goal-line clearance. The game was then effectively ended in a ten-minute spell with Halesowen’s captain Phil Wood and Worcester’s Mark Owen in the thick of the action. Owen saw his 58th minute effort blocked on the line by Neil Cartwright and Wood but he made amends a minute later when Wood slipped in teeming rain to allow Owen to take the ball on from midfield and slot into the bottom corner to restore Worcester’s lead. Wood was then dismissed by referee Pearson for a second bookable offence in the 62nd minute after an innocuous challenge on Owen on the edge of the penalty area. Five minutes later, Owen turned provider against a weakened Halesowen defence and his cross was easily converted by Micky Cotter from close range to give Worcester an unassailable lead. Worcester scored a flattering fourth in the 81st minute when substitute Chris Jefferson headed home directly from Wyatt’s corner.
