Salisbury City 2 Halesowen Town 1

New look Halesowen unveiled ex-Swansea City defender Jon Ford as another signing but fell behind after just 94 seconds of the new season when leading marksman Paul Sales was left free to fire past Andy Quy from 8 yards folowing Kevin Braybrook’s freekick.

With Salisbury looking equally edgy, the visitors forced four corners in quick succession and eventually levelled the scores after 14 minutes when Andy Dodd headed home from close range in a goalmouth scramble after Clinton Thomas and Michael Mason had been denied. Dodd then saw a 15 yard header superbly tipped over by goalkeeper Justin Shuttlewood. Mason was stretchered off with right ankle ligament damage in the 38th minute but his substitute Craig Dutton was quickly in action driving a 15 yard shot at Shuttlewood as Halesowen enjoyed a long spell of possession.

In the second half Sales twice went close for Salisbury before Halesowen’s Thomas turned well in the penalty area to shoot just wide on the hour. Substitute Stuart Payne produced a 65th minute cross which fellow striker Michael Griffiths almost met and then shot directly at Shuttlewood as Halesowen failed to turn their pressure into goals. In the 75th minute Salisbury stole the lead when Tyronne Bowers crossed from the right and Nick Miles set up Braybrook to score from 10 yards. Scott Darroch made another dazzling midfield run before firing high before forcing Shuttlewood into a great blocking save and two minutes from time Griffiths was put clear but shot wide to complete a disappointing but not disheartening day for the Yeltz.
