Halesowen Town 1 Telford United 1

Telford were held to a competitive draw at their hosts from the Dr Marten’s League on an excellent playing surface.

The Bucks took the lead in the 14th minute when Steve Palmer capitalised on a mix-up in the home defence, squeezing between central defenders Ross Collins and Phil Wood before tucking the ball past goalkeeper Andy Quy from 8 yards. Four minutes later, Telford almost extended their lead when a Kevin Davies corner was fumbled by Quy and Wood had to make a goal-line clearance. However, it was far from one-way traffic and Telford were given some anxious moments in the first-half with Ryan Price producing a fine blocking save from ex-Macclesfield midfielder Michael Mason before Richard Crisp saw his 25 yard drive fly just inches over the crossbar in the 21st minute. Palmer’s 20 yard drive was inches wide of the post in the 39th minute  but Halesowen levelled the scores a minute later when Neil Cartwright played a subtle but incisive pass from midfield allowing Richard Crisp to flick the ball over Price’s head from close range.

Jake King introduced five halftime substitutes as he took the opportunity to give his squad a workout and as the Bucks continued to press Chris Malkin flashed a header just wide of the post in the 55th minute from David Bridgwater’s corner. The lively Gez Murphy then forced Quy to make a fingertip save in the 69th minute from 10 yards out. Telford kept Halesowen quiet for most of the second period but substitute goalkeeper Bray did just enough to distract Halesowen’s Payne four minutes from time and his header fell just wide of the post.
