F.A. Trophy 1st Round - Saturday, 4th November, 2000

Halesowen Town 1 Bilston Town 3

Joe Jackson’s high flying Bilston took full advantage of another Halesowen home flop which left the troubled Premier outfit still without a home victory after nine attempts.

The Western Division leaders took the lead in the 37th minute when a right wing cross from Neil Manton deceived Halesowen goalkeeper Andy Quy and sailed into the top corner of the net.

The home side levelled three minutes later when Jason Owen unleashed a cracking 25 yard drive after battling work from an eager Ross Collins.

However, the Steelmen showed their mettle in the second half against a spineless Halesowen, even though their second goal displayed more than a hint of farce. Quy saved at the feet of Leon Woodley but referee McIlravey interpreted the intervention of a defender’s toe as a backpass and awarded an indirect freekick near the penalty spot. The Yeltz had no option but to build a wall on the goalline, but the defence was easily breached by a rasping shot from Scott Voice into the roof of the net.

Halesowen desperately tried to find a way back into the game, but as they lacked attacking inspiration, it was left to Bilston to show the route to goal. Quy made several inspired saves from the head of Lee Rollason and Woodley and only defender Owen came close for Halesowen with a 30 yard volley which clipped the bar. Bilston booked their second round tie with Ashton United and completed the Premier club’s agony three minutes from time when Voice skilfully turned home a cross from the impressive Danny Williams.
