Dr Martens Premier League - Saturday, 21st October, 2000

Halesowen Town 1 Dorchester Town 1

The Magpies let three points slip by giving away a late goal in a scrappy encounter against a poor Halesowen team who are still without a home win all season.

The weakened Dorchester defence appeared suspect early on and new goalkeeper Mark Ormerod had to race out of his goal twice within the first ten minutes only to be beaten on both occasions by striker Stuart Payne who was then unable to find the net. Ormerod then snatched the ball away from home striker Peter Sutton on the edge of his box as Halesowen again broke through in the 15th minute. At the other end, Dorchester man of the match Justin Keeler saw his 18th minute header sail just wide and he then fired just over the bar after cleverly taking down Owen Pickard’s pass three minutes later. In a dull first half, Ormerod was again on hand to block a 28th minute effort from Payne who was put clear on goal by Sutton. Just before the break Halesowen’s goalkeeper Andy Quy turned away a 25 yard curling effort from Matt Lennon.

After the halftime interval Mark Jermyn dispossessed Andy Comyn in front of goal but luckily for the home side the ball fell kindly for Andy Quy to clear his lines. The stalemate was finally broken in the 58th minute when Keeler waltzed through the home defence and although his shot was blocked, the ball eventually fell invitingly for Matty Holmes to turn home from 8 yards beyond the diving Quy. Martin Sullivan, making his first appearance on his return to Dorchester, then shot across the face of the goal after being set up by Lonnon and Pickard was tackled well in front of goal by Wayne Lloyd just as he was about to shoot.

Halesowen introduced three late substitutes as they searched for an equaliser and it was Ross Collins who proved most troublesome. Firstly he had a 76th minute effort disallowed for offside and then produced a tremendous right wing cross in the 86th minute but luckily for Dorchester no Halesowen striker was able to connect. However, just one minute later Halesowen equalised when defender Wayne Lloyd rose above everyone to power home a header from substitute Michael Mason’s corner. Dorchester survived a last minute onslaught to justly share the points but as they plan ahead for next Saturday’s important final qualifying game in the FA Cup against Welling they will be wary of the need to ensure they remain firm and disciplined at the back.
