FA Trophy 1st Round - Saturday, 3rd November, 2001

Barrow 2 Halesowen Town 1

Halesowen battled bravely for over 70 minutes with ten men but came unstuck when Unibond Premier Barrow notched a fortunate 91st minute winner.

After a scrappy opening, the hosts went ahead in the 7th minute when leading marksman Grant Holt powered a header beyond Tim Clarke from Simon Shaw’s cross. Halesowen levelled three minutes later when Barrow goalkeeper Steve Jones lost a cross from Les Hines under pressure from Andy Jones, leaving Kerry Giddings to smack home the loose ball from eight yards out.

Halesowen were forced to re-organise in the 18th minute when youngster Andy Spencer received a straight red card for a clumsy challenge on Scott Maxfield in front of the player dug-outs.

Despite boasting an unbeaten home run of 22 games Barrow struggled to make any headway and it was ten-man Halesowen who carved out the better chances on the break. Taylor shot just over after 50 minutes and three minutes later Steve Jones saved from substitute Matty Hall. For Barrow, Shaw picked up a loose ball in Halesowen’s penalty area in the 62nd minute but blasted his shot across the goal.

Ten minutes from time Steve Jones just saved a Lee Collins header at the foot of his post from Jason Burnham’s free-kick but Clarke then turned away a fierce strike from substitute Carl Waters.

Halesowen’s hearts were broken deep in stoppage time when a replay looked a certainty. Taylor lost the ball in midfield and Maxfield’s cross from a short corner bounced awkwardly over the defence and eluded Clarke before sailing directly into the corner of the net.
