Dr Martens Western Division – Saturday, 2nd March, 2002

Solihull Borough 1 Halesowen Town 1

Halesowen’s long away winning streak finally ended but they won an important point to prevent one of their promotion challengers from making any headway.

After a slow Halesowen start, Solihull’s Derek Hall hit the side-netting after 35 minutes from the edge of the box. Halesowen then enjoyed a fine spell before half-time and nearly took the lead when Leroy May picked up a rebound and fed Mark Taylor who in turn set up Les Hines to blast wide from a good position. The lead finally arrived when a 39th minute corner fell to May with his back to goal and he craftily back-heeled the ball into the net off Solihull’s Craig Dutton. Brendan Murphy then saved Jason Burnham’s tricky shot and at the other end Halesowen’s Tim Clarke saved well from Andy Lovelock.

Solihull deservedly equalised in the 63rd minute when a flowing move ending with Manual Pereira squaring for Chris Smith to fire into the bottom corner from 20 yards leaving goalkeeper Clarke standing. The league leaders appeared a little heavy-legged as the Boro’ put them under the cosh and survived a huge let-off six minutes later. A dangerous right-wing cross found two forwards free but Clarke made a fingertip save from Derek Hall’s weak effort and the excellent Richard Colwell completed the goal-line clearance. In an end-to-end finish, substitute Andy Jones fired high when well placed in the 80th minute and a Lee Collins header fell just wide for the visitors. For Solihull, Chris Smith shot high from the edge of the area on 85 minutes and Clarke produced a fine reflex save from a fierce 20-yard Simon Hollis shot with two minutes remaining.
