Dr Martens Premier Division – Saturday, 7th September, 2002

Halesowen Town 0 Dover Athletic 0

Dover kept up their unbeaten away record despite being reduced to ten men by the dismissal of Tony Browne.

The home side made the livelier start in search of their first win of the season with Richard Leadbeater striking the side-netting in the 6th minute and then shooting straight at goalkeeper Paul Hyde with the Dover defence split in the 12th minute. With Dover gradually getting into their stride a 20-yard effort from Jamie Day was tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Tim Clarke a minute later. Browne then rescued the visitors by clearing a powerful Lee Collins header off the line in the 26th minute.

In even late first half exchanges, Dover’s Nicky Dent could have done better when his 40th minute free header was easily collected by Clarke but central defender Andy Arnott made a decisive challenge to keep out Andy Jones in the Dover penalty area.

A minute after half-time a mix-up in the home defence left Clarke off his line but Danny Chapman fired the loose ball well over the bar. Matt Carruthers then sent in a speculative 52nd minute long range free-kick which Clarke just managed to save at the foot of his post.

Dover received a spate of bookings as the game developed into a physical battle and in the 70th minute Browne was dismissed for his second bookable offence. A clumsy challenge by Halesowen central defender Lee Collins on substitute Darren Davies led to a 75th minute free-kick on the edge of the area but Dover’s Davies fired the quickly-taken chance past the post.

Jones wasted Halesowen’s best chance when he blasted high with Hyde off his line in the 81st minute and at the other end home goalkeeper Clarke tipped a goalbound 20-yard volley from Chapman around the post.

Ten-man Dover soaked up Halesowen’s late pressure with their defence blocking a Shanahan volley, John Newall heading a corner just over the bar and Hyde beating away a Shanahan freekick to claim a deserved point.
