FA Trophy 1st Round – Saturday, 2nd November, 2002

Halesowen Town 4 Bath City 3

Rob Elmes cracked home a late Halesowen winner in a seven-goal thriller played in torrential rain.

The Yeltz took a 14th minute lead when Ross Collins laid off a simple ball against a static defence for the ever-improving Jason Ashby to beat Mark Hervin from 8 yards. Hervin endured a nervy afternoon in the Bath goal and dropped the first of a series of comical clangers when he spilled a 20th minute corner from Les Hines. However, Bath levelled in the 37th minute when Gary Thorne’s shot was parried by Tim Clarke and Jason Eaton hit the empty net.

Halesowen turned the screw with two goals at the start of the second period. Collins laid the ball off for overlapping full-back Richard Colwell to net a delightful 20-yard shot after 47 minutes and on 55 minutes Ashby claimed his sixth goal in six games by cleverly chipping Hervin from 18 yards.

Hopes of an easy ride were dashed when Thorne stole in behind the Halesowen defence to tap home a left-wing cross from Cleverly on the hour. Bath then introduced ex-Yeltz star Frankie Bennett and equalised again in the 78th minute when persistent Paul Milsom bulldozed through Halesowen’s defence and the ball fell invitingly for Eaton to hit home his second from six yards.

Seven minutes from time substitute Elmes sealed the tie by hitting a deflected 20-yard free-kick straight through hapless Hervin’s hands. Bath then forced Clarke to make a full stretch save from Bennett on the goal-line and deep in injury time Mike Trought netted but Milsom had already been penalised for pushing.
