Dr Martens Premier Division – Saturday, 24th August, 2002

Grantham Town 3 Halesowen Town 3

An open encounter produced plenty of chances but Halesowen had to settle for a point after conceding three goals from set pieces.

The Yeltz went ahead when Jason Burnham converted a 7th minute penalty after the suspiciously offside Richard Leadbeater latched onto a Lee Collins long ball and was pushed over by Ian Wilkins. Grantham equalised after 24 minutes with Darren Dye firmly heading home Jim Neil’s corner. The visitors then fell behind in the 29th minute after Stuart Skidmore bundled over Gary Bull and Neil cracked the direct free-kick straight into the bottom corner of Tim Clarke’s net.

The unmarked Jimmy Quiggin missing a great 35th minute chance when he volleyed a Burnham cross high from just 8 yards before Grantham’s Bull also missed an open goal by drilling wide at the opposite end when a long clearance bounced over the head of Lee Collins.

Halesowen were back on terms in the 42nd minute when Elmes headed down a Quiggin cross for Hines to drive home past Mario Zaccardi from 12 yards. However, the joy was short-lived when Grantham regained the lead on the stroke of half-time with Bull glancing home a right-wing corner against a static Halesowen defence.

It took Halesowen just two minutes of the second half to claim the final goal of the game with Quiggin firing home from a left-wing cross. Both defences continued to make mistakes with a poor clearance from Collins almost letting in Bull after 54 minutes. Grantham full-back Steve Wenlock then made two dreadful back-passes to put goalkeeper Zaccardi in trouble against Elmes and Hines, although both chances were wasted.

Grantham made three substitutions and applied late pressure in search of a winner. Dominic Hallows volleyed over a Jamie Clarke cross after 86 minutes and the hosts had a 90th minute penalty appeal turned down when Jamie Clarke hit the ball against substitute Dominic Reece. The Yeltz defence then hacked clear a 91st minute corner when Tim Clarke lost his way with the ball bobbling around in the area.
