Dr Martens Premier Division – Saturday, 26th October, 2002

Halesowen Town 0 Worcester City 0

Halesowen’s gradual improvement was maintained in a lively end-to-end encounter against the league leaders. Gavin Stone was handed a home debut due to the suspension of Lee Collins and produced a faultless display at the heart of the defence.

Tim Clarke touched a looping miscued shot from Darren Middleton onto the bar after 9 minutes but it was Kirk Master who caused problems for the visitors in the first half. Halesowen’s acting captain Richard Colwell found Master in the 13th minute with a delightful through ball but former Yeltz goalkeeper Danny McDonnell blocked from close range. Master then took advantage of a slip by visiting defender Allan Davies only to see his 18-yard shot grabbed at the second attempt by McDonnell. Worcester’s Webster then headed against the far post after 26 minutes. Stone made a fine 39th minute interception and sent Stuart Skidmore on a run to set up Leroy May to drive at McDonnell from 15 yards in another counter-attack.

The second half continued at a lightning pace with May putting a free header just wide from a Hines cross after 57 minutes. A great 64th minute break then saw Webster break free of John Newall before hitting his 15-yard shot inches wide of Clarke’s post.

Clarke preserved Halesowen’s point with two fine late saves. The injured Clarke made a great reflex stop from Middleton after 75 minutes with appeals for a penalty then turned down when the rebound fell to Webster and he was tackled from behind. Three minutes from time Clarke made another great fingertip save from Carty’s deflected volley.
