Dr Martens Premier Division – Saturday, 14th December, 2002

Halesowen Town 0 Hednesford Town 1

Hednesford completed a double over Halesowen and matched the previous Keys Park encounter with another late goal to send the Yeltz back into league trouble.

Having recently lost out to late goals themselves, Hednesford manager Ian Painter felt it was up to Halesowen to force the pace and was delighted to keep a clean sheet. Painter added that former Yeltz-favourite Steve Piearce was “nervous” beforehand but the predatory striker notched a late winner in a disappointing game with both defences in control.

Bryan Small’s 14th minute effort was disallowed by an early offside flag before the Pitmen missed the best chance of the first-half after 41 minutes. Small headed a right-wing cross into the path of Piearce but on-loan WBA goalkeeper Chris Adamson made a fine blocking save from just five yards with full-back Ashley Williams blasting the rebound high over an empty net. Jason Ashby then broke away at the other end and forced Michael Bingham off his line before squaring for Aaron Shanahan to clip the Hednesford cross-bar.

Small then hit the Yeltz crossbar on 53 minutes and Piearce forced Adamson to make a full-length save from his 20-yard shot a minute later. In the 56th minute May headed a Richard Colwell cross just wide of the mark and on the hour Stuart Ryder turned away another powerful May header for a corner.

With the game drifting towards stalemate, Halesowen’s misery was completed three minutes from time with a former striker causing the damage for the second week in a row as Piearce cracked home from 15 yards after Carl Adams found space in the Halesowen rear-guard.

Hednesford now meet Oldbury Utd. on Monday in the Birmingham Senior Cup and Halesowen take on Sutton Coldfield Town in the last sixteen of the Dr Martens Cup on Tuesday.
