Dr Martens Premier Division – Saturday, 28th December, 2002

Halesowen Town 2 Hastings United 1

Hastings arrived at the Grove bottom of current form, missing five players through injury and suspension, so it was no surprise that Halesowen made a lively opening.

Jason Ashby gave the Yeltz an 8th minute lead by crashing a Karl Brennan corner into the top of the net on the half-volley from 12 yards and a sack-full of Halesowen goals seemed on the cards.  However Nick Hegley gave Halesowen an 18th minute shock by unleashing a 25-yard pile-driver that rattled the inside of Chris Adamson’s post before rebounding across goal.

With Halesowen dominating, Hastings goalkeeper David King escaped when he twice failed to gather shots from Phil Trainer in the 25th and 30th minutes of the game. Neil Smith then back-headed a Brennan corner across the goal, but Leroy May was just unable to supply the final touch in the 36th minute.

Hastings levelled against the run of play a minute before half-time when a long Tony Burt cross was met by Paul Ruddy and the ball looped over the head of Adamson to nestle in the corner of the net to notch Hastings’ first goal in eight games.

Halesowen struggled to re-establish their superiority in the second period but substitute Richard Leadbeater finally regained their lead in the 64th minute by tapping home from close range after Hines skipped through the Hastings defence.

In the final minute striker Landry Zahana-Oni put the ball wide of Adamson’s post from 12 yards with a nervous Halesowen grateful for the final whistle to secure an important victory that keeps them hovering just clear of the drop-zone.
