Dr Martens Western – Saturday, 27th March, 2004

Halesowen Town 0 Redditch United 0

Goalkeeper Richard Anstiss saved a late Halesowen penalty and both sides were reduced to ten men in a compelling game that kept Redditch racing relentlessly towards the title.

Halesowen weathered a torrid opening spell with Richard Leadbeater crashing a header against the crossbar for the Reds after just 40 seconds and goalkeeper Mark Sheils rescued the Yeltz with a 18th minute flying reflex save from Alex Cowley’s goal-bound drive. Anstiss saved twice from Lewis Baker but the Reds finished the first half strongly with Matt Gardiner flicking a header against the crossbar from Sean Flynn’s 42nd minute corner.

Full-back Richard Colwell headed a 54th minute Leadbeater effort off his own goal-line but a fast and furious second half was dominated by Halesowen. Anstiss punched away a 58th minute cross from substitute David Foy and Gardiner headed clear Dave Haywood’s 62nd minute corner. The game erupted in the 66th minute when Nathan Lamey was shown a red-card for elbowing but ten-man Halesowen kept up the pressure with Foy’s 69th minute corner scrambled away by the Redditch defence and Foy headed another Haywood corner wide a minute later.

Halesowen’s hard-work was rewarded with a 78th minute penalty when a Simon Hollis shot struck Neil Manton’s arm but Anstiss made a splendid diving save to keep out Foy’s spot-kick. Sheils then saved Halesowen by racing off his line to save from Cowley on the break in the 84th minute.

With five minutes remaining Redditch substitute Craig Woodley was also shown a straight red-card for violent conduct.
