Sutton Coldfield Town 3 Halesowen Town 1

Sutton gave Paul Holleran his first taste of defeat as Halesowen manager and extended their own run to just one defeat in seventeen games in their vital last home game of the season.

Jason Moore headed a David Foy header over the bar in the 2nd minute but Naveed ARSHAD gave hard-working Sutton a 6th minute lead by nipping in to roll the ball into the net after goalkeeper Mark Sheils failed to claim the ball following a mix-up with his captain Asa Charlton. Novice home goalkeeper Darren Causer then saved a 20-yard free-kick in the 7th minute from Dave Heywood and Simon Hollis won the first of three consecutive Halesowen corners in the 11th minute although the visitors failed to make much impression on the Sutton rearguard.

The Royals doubled their lead on 22 minutes in a lightning break ended by Dean PERROW sweeping home a volley from close range from Mark Wolsey’s right-wing cross. Arshad should then have scored a third goal in the 33rd minute after being put clear by Perrow but he mis-kicked with only goalkeeper Sheils to beat.

Lewis Baker headed a 34th minute Hollis cross over the bar and in the 40th minute Jimmy Haarhoff just failed to control the ball after Sutton stopper Causer sliced the ball outside his own area. A Hollis corner then clipped the outside of the Sutton post in the final minute of the first-half.

Causer saved a 20-yard curling effort from Moore four minutes into the second half but Sutton wrapped up the game in the 50th minute when ARSHAD powered home a free header straight from Gardner’s right-wing free-kick.

Halesowen made three substitutions in the 58th minute but it was Sutton’s Perrow who sent a 25-yard drive just over the bar with Sheils off his line on the hour. Charlton hit a 25-yard free-kick over the bar a minute later and substitute Alfie Carter put in a good cross from the left in the 73rd minute for the visitors. Causer beat away a 20-yard shot from substitute Ben Steane in the 79th minute and then collected a 20-yard drive from Dan Jones with ten minutes remaining.

CHARLTON smashed home an 88th minute consolation goal from the penalty spot for Halesowen when Gardner was harshly penalised for bringing down Haarhoff but in the final minute Sheils beat away a shot from substitute Dominic Reece and saved a back-header from his own defender Richard Colwell.
