Southern League Premier Division – Monday, 28th March 2005

Merthyr Tydfil 1 Halesowen Town 2

Halesowen returned to winning ways with a confidence-boosting victory at fellow play-off hopefuls Merthyr.

The visitors maintained a period of early pressure as Nathan Lamey flashed a 20-yard shot wide after just 15 seconds and Nicki Preston’s 3rd minute header was cleared off the line by Danny Carter. Simon Forsdick then ballooned Lamey’s 9th minute cross over the bar from 5 yards.

The Yeltz finally made the breakthrough to end their long goal drought in the 33rd minute when Steve Pope smashed home a penalty kick after Jon Holloway was penalised for climbing over Lamey. Lamey then struck a good chance wide in the final minute of the first half after Jimmy Haarhoff broke forward.

Merthyr failed to trouble visiting goalkeeper Chris Taylor until being awarded another soft penalty in the 58th minute when Carter went down under pressure from Pope and Holloway easily converted from the penalty spot. Cowley’s own 59th minute penalty call was denied and Merthyr were then reduced to ten men when Carter was harshly dismissed on 64 minutes for muscling Forsdick off the ball as the young referee struggled to maintain control. Chris Bale’s 74th minute shot was deflected away for a Merthyr corner with the Halesowen seemingly unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage.

But Substitute Nick Smith grabbed Halesowen’s vital winner on 84 minutes by finishing well from 15 yards after playing a clever one-two with Lamey to shake-up the increasingly unpredictable league play-off situation once again.
