Southern League Premier Division – Saturday, 18th March 2006

Halesowen Town 2 Mangotsfield United 0

Halesowen kept their faint play-off hopes alive and skipped above their disappointing visitors with a comfortable win.  But the victory was witnessed by Halesowen’s lowest ever Southern League attendance of 216 and their worst Saturday gate since before the Vase glory years in the West Midlands League almost 25 years ago.

Mangotsfield were first to show and almost took the lead in the 7th minute when Halesowen’s defence failed to clear and Martin Paul smashed a 10-yard snap-shot against the crossbar. Two minutes later Paul’s cross was taken out by home goalkeeper Dean Coleman but from that point on very little was seen of the visitors as Halesowen took control.

Tom Warren turned the ball behind his own goal and Halesowen took the lead in the 10th minute from Dan Thompson’s resulting corner when a header from Nick AMOS crept over the line with the help of defender Ross Casey.

Coleman collected Tom Warren’s 20th minute looping shot and at the other end goalkeeper Nick Yeo raced out of goal with pacy James Francis approaching in the 36th minute.

Simon FORSDICK gave Halesowen a perfect start to the second half by scoring a second goal with a superb diving header over Yeo from the edge of the area in the 46th minute. Thompson curled a 20-yard free-kick just wide in the 57th minute on his impressive debut and five minutes later Howard Forinton played a delightful pass for Francis to flick just wide on a lightning break. Yeo was then fortunate to escape when his attempted 65th minute clearance stuck under his foot with Forinton bearing down on goal.

Late on, visiting substitute David Seal blazed over the bar from 12 yards but it wasn’t until the 86th minute that Mangotsfield finally managed another effort on target when Matt Locke was left free but Coleman saved his angled shot.

In injury time Nick Smith found veteran substitute Martin Myers free and he almost crowned his debut with a goal but his chip rebounded off the underside of the crossbar.
