Birmingham Senior Cup 2nd Round – Tuesday, 10th October 2006

Halesowen Town 2 Redditch United 5

Halesowen bowed out of the Birmingham Senior Cup at the first hurdle against Conference North neighbours Redditch with another avalanche making an entertaining total of twenty goals within the week.

The Yeltz made an ideal start when Nick SMITH scooped home an opening 5th minute goal from the edge of the area with the Redditch defence static while Richard Robinson was down injured. A 9th minute cross from Rob Warner was then headed wide by Sean Dowdall.

For the Reds, Damian Whitcombe flashed a 25 yard free-kick just wide on 10 minutes and Dave Walker’s shot was collected by goalkeeper Mark Gayle a minute later. Walker then struck wide from 18 yards in the 18th minute. WALKER levelled after 21 minutes when the ball looped up from Halesowen’s defence for him to fire home in plenty of space from 10 yards out. Scott Rickards then drove at Gayle in the 23rd minute and a 27th minute Redditch corner was cleared.

Simon Forsdick wore the captain’s armband and hit a 5-yard overhead kick just wide in the 31st minute. But Redditch took the lead in the 33rd minute when Duncan WILLETTS, formerly of Stourport Swifts and also a local cricket player, notched his first Redditch goal by heading home unmarked after Rickards turned the ball back across goal. Before the interval Chris Brindley’s header was cleared off the line by Whitcombe from Grant Beckett’s free-kick and both Nick Amos and Dowdall failed to bundle home the ball in a goalmouth scramble.

Nick SMITH grabbed his second goal of the evening to make it 2-2 with a 15-yard strike after Warner pulled the ball back from the right in the 50th minute. Francino Francis then turned well only for Gayle to block in the 56th minute and captain Carl Palmer drover wide two minutes later.

Chris MURPHY put Redditch back in the lead on 60 minutes after taking the ball on to beat Gayle from a narrow angle at the near post. Brindley headed towards goal and followed up with a shot at goalkeeper Richard Anstiss in the 64th minute before Redditch added a further two late goals against the much-changed Yeltz with Alex Cowley taking over as captain.

Debutante substitute Dean Aston was caught out for FRANCIS to nip in and convert from six yards in the 72nd minute and in the 80th minute substitute Simon HOLLIS beat debutante New Zealender substitute Dan Ludlow down the right before driving firmly home against his former club.
