Cirencester Town 0 Halesowen Town 2

Happy Halesowen moved into a play-off place with two first-half goals wrapping up a comfortable victory over struggling Cirencester.  But the Yeltz still missed a host of golden chances to make the score-line more emphatic after cutting clean through the home defence on several occasions. For all their effort, the Centurions had trouble finding their men and created few chances in a game made difficult by the blustery wind.

The plight of the troubled Centurions has resulted from the loss of up to eight players in recent weeks following an ongoing dispute with Hartpury College. But with only one win in their last twelve outings they must surely start looking anxiously over their shoulders and improve on this performance to seek points with more urgency if they are to avoid the dreaded drop as the fighting teams below them slowly gather points.

Davion Hamilton was just wide with his 3rd minute effort from the edge of the area but Cirencester won a rare 4th minute corner after Gary Knight left the ball and goalkeeper James Dormand sliced his clearance behind his own goal-line.

Halesowen then took a firm grip on the game and Lee Williams played a neat 8th minute interchange with Junior Brown to penetrate into the penalty area before scuffing his shot wide. Rob Warner’s 11th minute through ball to Brown beat the offside trap but his miscued shot found Paul Devlin to put wide at the far post. The Yeltz went ahead on 16 minutes when the home defence hit Devlin’s cross against their own bar and Gary Knight powerfully headed Devlin’s resulting corner against the underside of the crossbar with Nick AMOS on hand to head home the rebound from close range. Brown was then put clear yet again after 18 minutes but missed his kick and a back-pass from Lee Molyneaux almost wrong-footed Kevin Sawyer after the goalkeeper slipped up two minutes later.

Hamilton made a good run and cross from the left after 33 minutes and Cirencester finally featured again when Ian McSherry crossed from the left on 37 minutes and Steve Cowe hit a direct 22-yard free-kick over the bar. Two minutes later Dormand somehow kept out a free-header from Matt Jones following another free-kick.

The Yeltz increased the lead in the 43rd minute when Matt Lewis found Alex Cowley down the right and his cross picked out BROWN to control and tap home from three yards at the far post.

The start of the second-half saw little response from the weak opposition and on 50 minutes Sawyer did well to claw the ball away from Brown’s goal-bound shot. Devlin’s 55th minute cross was then headed across goal by Knight. Sawyer saved again at Lewis’s feet after he was put through in the 66th minute and a minute later substitute Lee Smith did well to block after Devlin was set free. For the Centurions, Cowe prodded at Dormand on 72 minutes and Dormand saved well three minutes later from Cowe on the turn from Michael Jackson’s right-wing cross in arguably the best chance of the whole afternoon from the hosts.

In almost pedestrian-style Lee Williams played the ball for Hamilton to play a good ball across goal on 80 minutes before the home defence displayed their lack of confidence by conceding a farcical corner a minute later. Substitute Aaron Farrell was put clear to strike wide weakly after 84 minutes and in the final minute Cowley put Farrell clean through on goal again but another chance to increase the lead was squandered as the raw striker shot straight at Sawyer.
