Halesowen Town 3 West Bromwich Albion XI 3

Halesowen staged a dramatic comeback to force three late goals in an encouraging and entertaining display against Craig Shakespeare’s West Bromwich Albion squad.

An unnamed WBA XI TRIALIST opened the scoring with a 14th minute shot beyond goalkeeper Danny Woodhall. However, Woodhall then made a good block from the same player on 21 minutes.

Halesowen gradually applied more pressure and Sean Dowdall just failed to make contact with his attempted header after ghosting in to meet Rob Warner’s 20th minute cross. Ian Cooper then blazed over the bar in the 35th minute from 20 yards out following another good move and five minutes before the interval Dowdall shot narrowly wide. Four minutes after the break a cross from Alex Cowley drifted onto the top of the crossbar before Matt Lewis went close on 53 minutes.

But the Baggies reserve squad proved to be more clinical and increased their lead in the 58th minute when Rob ELVINS converted from close range. Six minutes later the visitors made it 3-0 with a delightful 25-yard chip into the top corner of the net from the left by Stuart NICHOLSON.

The final quarter of the game belonged to Halesowen as they levelled the scores with a tremendous revival. Matt Lewis was awarded a 67th minute penalty after being brought down by Jared Hodgkiss but Luke Daniels saved Lewis’s spot-kick at chest-height after a short run-up.

But West Brom were then pegged back level with three home goals in a five-minute spell. Paul SZEWCZYK turned home in the 73rd minute after goalkeeper Daniels failed to hold onto a Nick Amos header from a left-wing corner. SZEWCZYK notched his second goal on 77 minutes after playing a neat interchange with Grant Beckett from a long through ball and AMOS claimed the 78th minute equaliser when his header crept home from Warner’s long throw-in.

The Yeltz nearly found a winner when Simon Forsdick struck just past the post in the 87th minute and Daniels made a smart save to deny Szewczyk his hat-trick a minute later. A minute from full-time substitute home goalkeeper Mark Gayle made a good save to deny Stuart Nicholson.
