British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division – Saturday, 26th August 2006

Halesowen Town 2 Tiverton Town 2

Halesowen threw away all their hard work and an important lead two minutes from full-time when Tiverton captain Nathan Rudge nodded home his second goal of the game from a set piece.

Tiverton goalkeeper Mark Rock collected a first minute attempt from Paul Szewczyk but the home side then survived a spell of pressure in the 5th minute after former Exeter player Barry McConnell forced a corner. Amidst plenty of early hustle and bustle, Simon Forsdick snatched a 20-yard shot wide after 20 minutes.

Grant BECKETT put Halesowen in front on 22 minutes to notch his first goal for the club with a low 20-yard shot through a crowded goal-mouth with the hint of a deflection after the ball was played into Matt Lewis from the right. Chris Bale almost equalised two minutes later when his fierce 22-yard drive fell inches wide but with Halesowen looking lively, Lee Williams struck a 36th minute effort just past the post from 20-yards out. Williams then played a neat 40th minute through ball but Lewis just failed to control the ball.

RUDGE levelled the score-line in the 42nd minute with a glancing header from a deep right-wing free-kick. But Halesowen regained their lead just two minutes later when SZEWCZYK nodded home his first Halesowen goal from a right-wing corner after Lee Williams’ free-kick had been headed off the line.

The solid-looking visitors searched for an equaliser after the break but their forward line, lead by former Exeter striker Steve Flack, were kept mostly quiet. However, Dave Haywood made an important clearance in front of goal from McConnell’s 58th minute cross and Tom Gardner’s free-kick drifted just wide of the mark on the hour. The Yeltz earned a 62nd minute corner when goalkeeper Rock spilled the ball and Lewis hit over the bar a minute later. Gardner’s 74th minute shot was then blocked with Chris Holloway firing the promisingly placed rebound over the bar. Lewis then made a good run down the left wing but his cross struck the Tiverton side-netting.

Just as it looked like the Yeltz were on course for victory, goalkeeper Mark Gayle half-heartedly flapped at an 88th minute corner allowing RUDGE to gratefully head home a second equaliser and two vital points were lost.
