British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division – Monday, 9th April 2007

Halesowen Town 1 Merthyr Tydfil 0

Halesowen notched another vital three points thanks to Aaron Farrell’s first goal for the club. Chances of reaching the play-offs improved dramatically as the five other closest play-off hopeful teams were all remarkably defeated in a great day for the Yeltz as they moved back up to fourth in the table.

FARRELL claimed the winning goal in the 5th minute by chasing a long ball and managed to get between the last defender and goalkeeper Ashley Morris to leave himself a simple lob home from 15 yards. Halesowen then enjoyed long spells of possession after taking the early lead against a disappointing Merthyr Tydfil on a bone-hard surface.

A deceptive deep Davion Hamilton cross after 9 minutes struck the top of the crossbar with Morris under pressure from Jermaine Palmer. Paul Devlin turned well in the 15th minute but his low 22-yard shot was turned around the post by Morris for a corner. Palmer then headed on James Dormand’s long 19th minute clearance but Farrell lobbed just wide of the post. Farrell burst through again and held off captain Neil Smothers on 22 minutes but Morris made a good save with Nick Amos meeting the resulting Devlin corner. Matt Harris then hit a speculative 25-yard shot just wide two minutes later for the visitors and Farrell flicked a header wide from Hamilton’s 26th minute cross.

The Yeltz parked in the Merthyr half until the break but were unable to increase their lead and two minutes after the interval Farrell sliced wide from a good position. Neat play after 50 minutes saw Rob Warner set up Simon Forsdick to cross but Palmer’s close range shot fell just wide. Two minutes later Stuart Pierpoint’s header was cleared off the line from Devlin’s corner and on the hour Devlin laid the ball off but Forsdick blazed over the bar.

Ceri Bowley almost put through his own net with a powerful 61st minute header but Morris superbly tipped the ball away for a corner and Forsdick sliced wide of the mark after 70 minutes. Craig Steins turned the ball into the Halesowen net with his hand from a 77th minute right-wing free-kick and received a yellow card for his troubles.

Late on Halesowen forced three consecutive corners with an Amos header cleared off the line and although Merthyr forced an 87th minute corner the Yeltz comfortably held onto the vital three points with the visitors barely troubling Dormand all afternoon.
