British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division – Tuesday, 27th March 2007

Halesowen Town 1 Cheshunt 0

Gareth Sheldon’s maiden goal moved Halesowen into fourth spot in the league table as an excellent home defence marshalled superbly by Nick Amos and Stuart Pierpoint edged Halesowen safely to a narrow victory.

The kick off was delayed until 8pm after the late arrival of the Cheshunt coach but the visitors started brightly on the back of two wins with Lloyd Opara firing over the bar in the 3rd minute. Simon Forsdick made a good run down the right after 13 minutes and Jermaine Palmer almost beat goalkeeper Martin Peat to the ball two minutes later from Forsdick’s flick on. Paul Devlin then laid the ball off for Gareth Sheldon to balloon over in the bar on 19 minutes.

Halesowen notched the winning goal after 21 minutes when a left-wing corner was only partly cleared and SHELDON lobbed the ball back in and over the defence into the net from 12 yards.

Home goalkeeper James Dormand collected Dewayne Clark’s 25th minute header but on the break Palmer set Forsdick free but his good cross flashed along the goal. As the game entered a niggly spell Peat lost a deep free-kick but the ball was scrambled clear. Nick Amos then helped to tidy up in a 45th minute scramble in the home area and on the counter-attack Palmer’s cross was just out of Forsdick’s reach.

Two minutes after the interval a 20-yard free-kick from David Hicks was cleared and on 55 minutes Opara shot straight at Dormand in a good spell of pressure from Cheshunt. But in an often scrappy half, Palmer headed well wide from Devlin’s 61st minute free-kick and Peat took out Forsdick’s 66th minute cross. The Ambers went close in the 68th minute when Lee Allen played a one-two in the area but Dormand made a good blocking save. Palmer’s 69th minute effort from 20 yards was collected by Peat and in the 87th minute Lee Williams played a through ball but substitute Aaron Farrell lofted the ball over the bar.

In the final minute Dormand did well to gather Clark’s cross and in injury time Rob Warner made a vital clearance off the line after substitute Kerem Baskal’s shot was turned away for a corner.
