FA Trophy 1st Qualifying Round – Saturday, 21st October 2006

Hednesford Town 2 Halesowen Town 2

Halesowen led twice but were forced to a replay as Hednesford found a rapid equaliser on both occasions.

The game sprung to life with two goals late in the first half. The Yeltz took a 43rd minute lead when Gary KNIGHT headed home unchallenged at the back post from a Lee Williams corner. But the lead was short lived as the Pitmen equalised in the 45th minute as Darren Alexander won the ball in the Halesowen area and set up Tom MARSHALL to poke home from close range.

Marshall and Chris White clashed heads at the start of the second period but Marshall recovered to make a crucial saving tackle to deny Paul Szewczyk. Szewczyk then fired a short range shot over the bar after a cross from Rob Warner evaded Matt Lewis.

Halesowen re-established the lead with a Matt LEWIS penalty in the 70th minute after Alex Cowley beat Terry Henshaw with some clever wing-play and his cross led to a shot striking the arm of Iain Screaton.

However, yet again, no doubt to the annoyance of the management team, the Yeltz failed to hold onto the lead for long as the home side levelled again two minutes later. A 72nd minute long throw-in from Screaton wasn’t cleared by the Halesowen defence, allowing Mario PEDRO to stab home through a crowd of players.

Goalkeeper Danny Woodhall escaped with just a yellow card in the 82nd minute when he bundled Ross Dyer to the ground outside his penalty area. Lewis then almost won the game in the dying minutes but he scuffed his shot after Williams created an opening.
