FA Trophy 2nd Qualifying Round – Saturday, 4th November 2006

Halesowen Town 1 Clitheroe 1

Halesowen failed to show their higher league credentials with a disappointing draw against hard-working Clitheroe.  James Dean played a starring role with his equaliser forcing an unwanted replay as Halesowen were once again unable to keep their first home clean sheet of the season. With injuries and suspensions still a major problem, the Yeltz lined up with Stuart Pierpoint returning as one of three centre-backs and Ian Cooper starting in midfield.

Dave Haywood was wayward with a 2nd minute shot and then hit a 6th minute free-kick straight at goalkeeper Paul Horridge. But after Simon Forsdick headed an 8th minute cross wide, it was the Unibond Division One visitors who created the better chances.

Will Eyton screwed a good chance wide after being let in by a Cooper blooper in the 14th minute and in the 18th minute impressive Owen Roberts rattled the cross-bar with a superbly struck 25 yard free-kick. Home goalkeeper Dan Woodhall then tipped Darrell Avery’s 20 yard shot over the bar and produced a similar save from Gregg Anderson’s 18 yard effort seconds later.

Below-par Halesowen rarely threatened in the opening half although Sean Dowdall’s 25th minute shot was collected by Horridge and Pierpoint’s 32nd minute free-kick almost deceived the Clitheroe defence with Paul Szewczyk inches away from the ball. But before the break, it was Clitheroe’s Roberts who hit another 25 yard free-kick just past the post on 35 minutes and Dean thrashed wide two minutes later.

A double half-time substitution saw Alex Cowley and Chris Brindley introduced to bring more bite and it seemed that Halesowen had got out of jail by taking a 54th minute lead when DOWDALL latched onto a long ball to loft the ball over Horridge from the edge of the area. On 58 minutes Jeff Underwood stopped Dowdall bearing down on goal again and Horridge saved a super Cooper 20 yard shot a minute later.

But Halesowen failed to build on their advantage and had a let off in the 66th minute. Woodhall initially punched a corner clear but Simon Garner’s following cross then rebounded back to safety off the inside of the far post as the ball evaded everyone including lurking striker Dean and goalkeeper Woodhall. Roberts then had a 72nd minute penalty shout denied by the referee.

Clitheroe finally got their reward with a 79th minute equalising goal when Underwood’s free-kick fell for DEAN to swivel and sweep home into the corner of the net from 15 yards.

The visitors coped with some desperate late route-one football from Halesowen by clearing from substitute James Francis after Brindley headed on in the 85th minute. From an 86th minute corner another effort from Francis was defended on the goal-line line and Brindley’s follow-up header was cleared, but in the dying seconds, it was Clitheroe’s Jason Jones who went close to meeting a right-wing cross.
