Worcestershire Senior Cup First Round – Saturday, 25th November 2006

Malvern Town 1 Halesowen Town 2

Halesowen overcame Malvern with Martin O’Connor and Graham Hyde observing from the stands and ready to take up the managerial reins this week.

With Malvern still seeking their first home win all season it was higher league Halesowen who soon gained the upper hand. Matt Lewis went close in front of goal in the 2nd minute and in the 4th minute Simon Forsdick released Steve Hillman down the left but he put in a poor cross. Tom Hobbs broke through the Halesowen defence but struck wide a minute later and Forsdick then headed over the Malvern bar in the 6th minute from a Lee Williams cross.

WILLIAMS put Halesowen ahead in the 11th minute with a sensational 30-yard drive after spotting goalkeeper Craig Humphries off his line. Humphries reacted well to take the ball from Sean Dowdall in the 20th minute before Dowdall put an overhead kick over the bar three minutes later. Lewis struck a 25th minute free-kick from the edge of the area straight at the Malvern defensive wall but on 31 minutes another Lewis free-kick was well saved at the foot of the post by Humphries with Dowdall failing to turn home the rebound.

At the start of the second period Malvern cleared Dowdall’s glancing header off the line from a Williams cross. Malvern’s Jamie Hyde broke free down the left to cross along the face of the Halesowen goal in the 53rd minute and Alex Cowley set up Forsdick to fire over the Malvern bar from 12 yards in the 55th minute.

DOWDALL added a second Yeltz goal in the 61st minute from 10 yards after good work down the left by Forsdick. But Halesowen gave themselves some anxious last few minutes after substitute Edward LYONS reduced the arrears by bursting through the centre to curl home from the edge of the area. Halesowen goalkeeper Dan Woodhall then pushed away an 87th minute effort from substitute Nick Butler before saving from Rik Halion to set up a home tie with Bromsgrove in the next round.
