British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division – Tuesday, 30th January 2007

Merthyr Tydfil 2 Halesowen Town 3

A fabulous hat-trick from Troy Deeney gave Halesowen an impressive win at Penydarren Park by turning a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory in their 11th game unbeaten.

Merthyr struck the post in the first minute as they sought to put their first home league defeat just three days earlier behind them. But tireless livewire DEENEY put Halesowen ahead in the 3rd minute to give the visitors a lead that was maintained until half-time.

The Martyrs stormed back with two goals in a three-minute spell midway through the second period. Leading striker Garry SHEPHARD equalised after 70 minutes and on 72 minutes former Newport County defender Gareth WHARTON put the hosts ahead. But Halesowen had other ideas and showed tremendous fighting spirit to recover in the dying minutes.

DEENEY levelled the scores in the 83rd minute with his second goal of the evening. DEENEY then completed a fine hat-trick with two minutes remaining to hand Halesowen all three points and take them up to 5th and a play-off position in the league table.
