British Gas Business Football League Premier Division – Tuesday, 11th March 2008

Halesowen Town 2 Gloucester City 1

Eldon Maquemba’s goal 14 minutes from time edged Halesowen to a narrow victory and fired them to the top of the table.  The striker’s turn of pace took him past two defenders and into the area where he calmly placed his shot beneath Kevin Sawyer in the Gloucester goal.

The Tigers, who began the game just outside the play-off places, paid the price for squandering back-to-back chances moments earlier and their frustrations boiled over when boss Tim Harris was sent from the dugout for comments made to the referee’s assistant, Mr R. Lovegrove MBE.
It was the visitors who adapted more quickly to the storm-force wind, with a snaking run and shot from Lee Smith after five minutes forcing a good save from home goalkeeper Mark Osborn. That proved to be a wake-up call for Halesowen and tricky Ikechi Anya sent an effort over the Gloucester cross bar from 20 yards. Midway through the first half Sawyer was pressed into service as he smothered a low shot from local lad and former favourite Alex Cowley, back at the club after spells with Redditch United and Bromsgrove Rovers earlier in the season.
Halesowen’s pressure finally told on the half hour when Darren Caskey’s corner was headed on by defender Stuart Pierpoint for leading scorer Dean BRENNAN to find the final touch by directing his header over the line. Gloucester levelled the scores a minute before the interval when Alex SYKES drilled home from the penalty spot after Jack Pitcher had been fouled by Dennis Pearce.
Both sides could have added to their tally in the second half with Nick Amos and Maquemba just off target for Halesowen while Pitcher and Smith missed good opportunities at the other end. But MAQUEMBA made amends and wrapped up another vital three points with his late winner to take the Yeltz into top spot.
