Halesowen Town 1 Yate Town 0

A solitary Lee Williams goal guided ten man and injury stricken Halesowen to a much-needed win and their first clean sheet of the season.  Reserve goalkeeper Chris Jay was called up to replace axed contract keeper James Dormand as the Yeltz sought to put a below-par start to the season behind them.

The first half held little excitement although Aaron Farrell played a dangerous ball across the Yate goal in the 2nd minute and in the 18th minute Nick Wright skipped through the visiting defence before blasting over the bar from 15 yards. Hard-working Wright then did well to fire along the Yate goalmouth with Farrell just unable to reach the ball at the far post on 26 minutes.

Neither side caused any great danger with a couple of corners each but in the 34th minute recalled full-back Dave Haywood planted a cross onto the roof of Yate’s net with goalkeeper Tony Court furiously back-pedalling. Farrell was first to the ball in the penalty area after 37 minutes but couldn’t beat Court and on 40 minutes Court beat the ball clear from Wright. Four minutes before the interval Yate captain Lee Jefferies powered a header over the bar from Dave Elsey’s corner.

The second half provided much more entertainment and two minutes after the restart Jay did well to tip the ball over his bar from Aaron Blakemore’s header.

Lee WILLIAMS grabbed the winning goal on 53 minutes by placing a delightful 18-yard half volley into the corner of the net following good work down the left by Liam McDonald. But the Yeltz were reduced to ten men just a minute later when Sean Platt received a red card for impeding Dave Anyinsah, following his first half booking for dissent. Manager Martin O’Connor immediately sacrificed centre-forward Farrell in order to shore up his defence by introducing debut substitute and former WBA youngster Jeff Forsyth.

With the ten men battling bravely, Haywood set Wright free on the break but he shot weakly wide on the hour. Court then made a splendid save to turn Wright’s 64th minute shot for a corner after being put clear by a header on from Nick Amos.

But Halesowen escaped when Anyinsah’s 65th minute effort rebounded off the inside of the post to safety with Jay beaten. Jay then grasped Anyinsah’s 76th minute strike. Young Jay then became the hero with a fine reflex blocking save with his legs in front of goal to keep the points safe with three minutes remaining.
