Halesowen Town 2 Brackley Town 0

Halesowen made almost certain of their first ever appearance in the end-of-season play-offs after reeling off yet another hard-fought victory in blustery conditions.

The Saints were hoping to keep their own play-off challenge alive by repeating their FA Trophy success at the Grove earlier in the season and forced an early 3rd minute corner. But the Yeltz settled and took the lead after just 10 minutes from the penalty spot. Nick Amos guided a throw-in from the left on to debutant Andy Hall and although Hall was pulled back, the referee played an advantage before winding back play to award the penalty after goalkeeper Richard Knight made a good save to deny Jay Denny. Leading scorer Dean BRENNAN stepped up to convert the penalty kick to Knight’s right and record his 17th goal of the season.

Brackley’s Jamie Patterson hit over the bar on 13 minutes and Danny Spencer headed high after Alex Cowley turned the ball behind for a 16th minute corner. An 18th minute free-kick from Tom Winters on the left was then diverted away for another corner. But with the strong wind on their backs, Halesowen went close again after 20 minutes when Eldon Maquemba shot just past the post on the turn from Ikechi Anya’s cross. Ryan Semple then blazed inches over the home bar and on 35 minutes Halesowen skipper Darren Caskey set up Hall to turn his marker and drive marginally wide with Maquemba just unable to connect.

Visiting goalkeeper Knight made a couple of fine saves at the start of the second period. Knight tipped the ball over the bar after 55 minutes when Anya side-stepped his marker in the penalty area to shoot from ten yards. Knight did even better with a terrific stop just a minute later when he back-pedalled to keep out Denny’s shot after the ball took a wicked deflection and was destined to loop into the net. Opposite goalkeeper Mark Osborn then did well to turn the ball away for a corner at his far post in the 58th minute.

Halesowen secured another vital three points in the 64th minute when Brennan played a ball forward down the centre for MAQUEMBA to outpace two defenders and superbly smash past Knight on the half-volley. The visitors were unable to make any headway late on as the Yeltz defended solidly to set up an enticing top of the table clash at Team Bath on Easter Monday.
