Mangotsfield United 2 Halesowen Town 2

Halesowen maintained their nine game unbeaten run but relinquished a two-goal lead in the final regular fixture of the season at in-form Mangotsfield.  With third place in the table already secure, the Yeltz took the opportunity to rest several key players ahead of Tuesday’s vital play-off semi-final against Chippenham Town at The Grove.

Cheered on by fancy-dressed fans in fine voice, Rodney HICKS gave Halesowen a 10th minute lead with a 12-yard low drive into the bottom corner beyond goalkeeper Josh Clapham after the ball was played across from the right. Stuart Pierpoint headed away for a 15th minute corner and a second home corner on 24 minutes from Luke Ballinger was only helped onto the bar by goalkeeper James Dormand with Andy Criddle crashing the loose ball over the bar.

The Mangos thought they had equalised amidst controversy on the half hour when Alex Cowley headed away a left-wing corner and assistant manager Jon French superbly smashed home the loose ball from 20 yards. But the assistant referee raised his flag after spotting the corner kick was taken outside of the quadrant and the goal was disallowed after a consultation with the referee despite the players already lining up for the re-start and the PA system announcing the ‘goal’.

Halesowen suffered a huge blow three minutes before the interval when captain Nick Amos fell awkwardly and limped out of the game and probably also the play-offs with a twisted ankle injury.

Six minutes into the second half reserve goalkeeper Dormand turned Criddle’s header onto the crossbar and out for a corner. But the visitors increased their lead on 58 minutes when Clapham was left up the junction as he scrambled to keep out a backpass but youngster Tom PIOTROWSKI was on hand to touch the ball just over the line with the goalkeeper grasping to clutch the ball.

Mangotsfield reduced the arrears just two minutes later when Alan GRIFFIN followed up after Dormand originally saved from Neil Arndale. James CREW then equalised for the Mangos in the 72nd minute with Dormand at fault for diving over his 10 yard shot. Halesowen finished the game strongly with Clapham making a good save from Nathaniel Waite in the 85th minute and Waite then broke away down the left to cross but Stuart Maynard could only strike the crossbar from a good position and Zema Abbey hit the rebound at Clapham with just two minutes remaining.
