Halesowen Town 2 Mangotsfield United 0

Goals from defensive-duo Dennis Pearce and Scott Lycett ended ten-man Mangotsfield’s long thirteen game unbeaten run as Halesowen’s extra midweek training paid dividends.

But Mangotsfield started brightly and created three good chances within eight minutes of the start. Jack Allward cracked the post after exploiting a gap to the right of defensive wall from a 4th minute free-kick on the edge of the area. Neil Arndale then drove forward but goalkeeper Mark Osborn saved low down two minutes later and in the 8th minute Alan Griffin stole behind the Halesowen defence from Ronnie Mowatt’s free-kick but Osborn produced a super save to keep out the header.

The Yeltz took the lead with their first attack on 10 minutes with PEARCE converting a right-wing corner into the roof of the net in a crowded goalmouth. Eldon Maquemba could have increased the lead five minutes later after shrugging off a challenge but blazed over the bar from within the six-yard box. Shane Paul and Dean Brennan then fired in 24th minute shots with Maquemba missing the rebound after attempting an overhead kick.

Midway through the first half Ellis Wilmot’s 26th minute free-kick almost found a Mangotsfield head in the 26th minute but Osborn managed to push the ball away and Gary Thorne headed a corner just over the Halesowen bar two minutes later. Luke Ballinger then headed a good chance wide of the mark in the 33rd minute.

But Mangotsfield’s chances effectively ended when Alex Ball was sent off with a straight red card in the 42nd minute after hauling down Maquemba on the edge of the area. Although Maquemba pulled himself up to be clear on goal the referee had already blown and the advantage was lost with Brennan chipping the resulting free-kick over the bar.

The second-half produced few chances on the sodden surface but Brennan’s 50th minute free-kick was hacked clear and hard-working Jay Denny played an excellent through ball a minute later but Brennan chose the wrong way by trying to cut inside.

Halesowen made the points secure with a second goal in the 72nd minute when former Leicester City full-back LYCETT pushed forward to collect and control Darren Caskey’s long free-kick before slotting past goalkeeper John Rendell. The Yeltz played the passing game to play out time and almost added a third goal when Paul curled just wide in injury time.
