Birmingham Senior Cup 1st Round – Tuesday, 11th September 2007

Halesowen Town 0 Birmingham City 2

Halesowen were only narrowly beaten by a strong Birmingham City line-up in the first round of the Birmingham Senior Cup.

The visitors included Frank Quadrue signed for nearly £2 million from Middlesborough, Daniel De Ridder formerly of Ajax, Rowan Vine - another signing in the million-plus bracket from Luton last season, Martin Taylor, Neil Danns and Mat Sadler. The Blues also included Jonathan Oubina from Spain and Wilsom Palacios from Honduras, both on trial.

Aaron Farrell missed a golden opportunity for the Yeltz in the 6th minute when goalkeeper Artur Krysiak made an error with his clearance to present the ball to Farrell, but the striker dwelt too long before curling wide. De Ridder’s 18th minute free-kick from 20 yards was deflected wide by Vine and Oubina scuffed a chance when goalkeeper Chris Jay failed to fully clear a cross from De Ridder two minutes later. Home defender Stuart Pierpoint then made a good block when Vine crossed for Danns in the 26th minute. In the 38th minute Jay collected a 20-yard shot from Palacios low down and two minutes later Quedrue headed a corner straight at Jay.

The Blues snatched the lead in the 44th minute when a left wing cross from Sadler evaded Dave Haywood and DE RIDDER shuffled back inside Haywood before firing home.

After the break, De Ridder made a good cross from the right on 58 minutes and a minute later Vine flashed a header wide.

But for long spells Halesowen more than matched the millions of pounds of talent on display in Birmingham colours with the disappointing Palacios drilling well wide in the 74th minute.

Halesowen made a good move forward in the 77th minute when substitute Davion Hamilton skipped down the left to put fellow substitute Nick Wright through to surge into the penalty area. But the visitors sealed the tie with a flattering second goal in the final minute when Danns crossed to find VINE all alone in the area to crash the ball home.
