Halesowen Town 0 Bedford Town 2

Halesowen suffered a deeply disappointing defeat in their first home game in front of a good-sized Grove crowd.

Bedford were still smarting from Saturday’s 4-0 home defeat by Bromsgrove when Michael Lyon managed to get behind the Yeltz defence in the 4th minute but he drove straight at James Dormand. For Halesowen, Dormand’s long 10th minute clearance put Aaron Farrell free but his lob over goalkeeper Michael Armitt rebounded off the crossbar. Halesowen’s first corner from Paul Devlin on 19 minutes was then cleared. A worrying groin injury caused striker Devlin to be replaced with Aza O’Garro in the 23rd minute and below-par Halesowen rarely looked comfortable for the rest of the evening.

The Eagles took a 25th minute lead when Dormand’s poor clearance allowed Lyon to round the goalkeeper and with Dormand out of position, a shot from James Hatch was blocked before the ball fell for Ben FARRELL to fire home from the edge of the area.

Before the break Ed Booth headed a gentle free-kick behind his own goal for a corner and Rob Miller’s free-kick from 25 yards was saved by Dormand on the stroke of half-time.

The Yeltz looked momentarily livelier after the break with Aaron Farrell firing across the face of goal for substitute Aza O’Garro to strike just wide in the 46th minute. Liam McDonald then hit a 55th minute free-kick straight at goalkeeper Michael Armitt and Shane Paul delivered a dangerous 62nd minute free-kick with Jay Denny’s shot blocked from the resulting corner.

But Bedford wrapped up the game with their second goal on 66 minutes when Stuart SINCLAIR’s 25-yard effort took a deflection to dip over goalkeeper Dormand. Rob Miller and Lyon then set up Derwayne Stupple in front of goal but he fired weakly at Dormand in the 75th minute. Halesowen continued to struggle to find their rhythm up front although Shane Paul’s 79th minute free-kick was headed onto the roof of the net by O’Garro.

Bedford almost grabbed a third goal when Ben Farrell initiated an 80th minute break only to see Lyon balloon the ball over the bar and in injury time Sinclair curled another effort just wide.
