F.A. Cup 2nd Qualifying Round – Saturday, 29th September 2007

Halesowen Town 2 Bedworth United 1

An early Paul Devlin goal set Halesowen on their way into the 3rd Qualifying Round against lower league battling Bedworth.

The Yeltz made a perfect start when Nick Amos headed on a left wing cross for man of the match DEVLIN to open the scoring by calmly slotting past goalkeeper Andrew Kemp from five yards in the 2nd minute. Gilbert Cummins struck a 20-yard drive straight at home goalkeeper Chris Jay in the 7th minute but two good crosses from Nick Wright then caused panic in the Bedworth defence two minutes later. Liam McDonald curled a 25-yard free-kick just past the post on 12 minutes before Devlin flicked the ball into the net again in the 28th minute after Amos nodded on again - but this time the effort was ruled offside.

Lee Greenway had already wasted a free header in the Halesowen area before his 29th minute shot flew just wide of the mark as the committed visitors stuck to their task. Wright burst forward to toe-poke wide in the 31st minute and seconds before the interval Kemp had to beat away another 20-yard free-kick from McDonald with the resulting corner being cleared.

Lee Williams replaced Wright for the second half and the Yeltz seemed to have sewn up the game by adding a second goal in the 50th minute. Devlin deceived defender Daniel Pitham to pull the ball back from the bye-line to find Jay DENNY and he allowed the ball to drop before cracking home on the half-volley. Devlin then just failed to beat Kemp to a long through ball in the 54th minute.

But Halesowen made life difficult for themselves by allowing Bedworth to pull a goal back in the 73rd minute. Dennis Pearce needlessly lost the ball and although he recovered to scoop the ball off the line, substitute Adam KINDER was on hand to follow-up and drive home from close range.

Home nerves held firm as the Greenbacks applied pressure in the latter stages but without ever really looking capable of grabbing an equaliser and it was Halesowen who created the better chances. Shane Paul surged forward to fire wide in the 77th minute and Devlin flashed a header over the bar from McDonald’s 82nd minute free-kick. Devlin then headed on for Amos to scuff his shot in front of goal in the 85th minute and a minute later Devlin headed onto the roof of the net. In stoppage time Devlin set up Denny to place his shot just wide of the post.
