Halesowen Town 2 Walsall XI 0

Another impressive display earned Halesowen a well deserved two-goal victory over a Walsall XI that saw former players Troy Deeney and Mannie Smith return to the Grove in opposition colours. The Yeltz moved the ball around well all evening and new signing Michael Briscoe gave the central defence a much more solid feel.

Alex Cowley won the ball in a tough 4th minute challenge to put Dean Brennan clear on goal but goalkeeper Tom Cox made a good blocking save. Cox was down swiftly to save from Aaron Cornwall after 8 minutes and in the 11th minute Brennan showed superb ball control to cut in and blast another fierce effort at Cox with Justin Rowe firing the rebound over the bar. Cornwall released Mark Danks to shoot over the bar in the 13th minute before the visitors finally featured when former Halesowen striker Troy Deeney shot straight into the midriff of home goalkeeper Nathan Vaughan.

Rowe headed just over in the 32nd minute and a quickly taken 40th minute free-kick also found Rowe but Cox blocked again to concede a corner. Just before the interval substitute Jermaine Palmer could only head over from close range following a fine Danks cross and another cross from Danks was headed off the line by Darryl Westlake.

The Yeltz took a deserved lead after 51st minute when substitute Zema Abbey headed back a cross for PALMER to finally nod past Cox within the 6-yard box. Danks’s 57th minute shot was pushed away by Cox before Halesowen escaped five minutes later as Harry Harris’s free-kick from the edge of the area took a nasty deflection and Carlton Davies blazed over the bar after the ball rebounded back off Vaughan. Brennan and Danks dragged shots wide before Saddlers’ substitute George Bowerman was inches wide with his shot on the turn on 80 minutes. Halesowen’s Palmer then held off his defender to strike the outside of the post in the 83rd minute.

Cox capped a fine display in the Walsall goal to claw away a superb 20 yard drive from Danks in the 87th minute but Cox was beaten by Halesowen’s second goal to seal the game with seconds remaining as CORNWALL stole in to head home a left wing corner at the far post.
