Halesowen Town 1 Atherstone Town 1

Halesowen were held to a 1-1 draw by Midland Division newcomers Atherstone Town in a keenly contested contest.

Justin Rowe clipped the Atherstone crossbar in the first minute and Scott Clamp drove just past Halesowen’s post after 4 minutes. Jermaine Palmer then flicked just wide on 17 minutes.

The Adders took the lead in the 21st minute when Aaron Cornwall was penalised for pulling and Kyle STORER converted from the penalty spot. But Halesowen equalised within a minute after full-back Dean Smith whipped in a deep cross from the right for PALMER to beat goalkeeper Lloyd Ransom with a fine 12-yard header.

Jay Denny collected well to volley at Ransom in the 25th minute before Storer went close for Atherstone when his clean header struck the crossbar on the half-hour. Mark Danks played a magnificent pitch-wide pass to put Rowe clear in the 36th minute but goalkeeper Ransom blocked and seconds before the interval both Rowe and Palmer were denied in front of goal.

Yeltz half-time substitute Zema Abbey collected Dean Brennan’s 50th minute free-kick but struck straight at Ransom and Cornwall’s bullet header went wide four minutes later. Atherstone’s prolific striker Roy Dunkley had his 60th minute effort disallowed for offside and late on Danks also put the ball in the net after the referee’s assistant had already raised his flag. But all in all the Adders fully deserved their draw in a good work-out just seven days ahead of the new season.
