Halesowen Town 3 Evesham United 1

Versatile Halesowen player-coach Darren Caskey went down in Yeltz folklore by producing a sensational penalty save after taking over in goal from red-carded goalkeeper Nick Bussey.

Evesham’s Gary Hay hooked the ball at home goalkeeper Bussey under pressure from Michael Briscoe in the 9th minute and on 19 minutes a defence-splitting pass from Danny Lennon put Hay through to shoot weakly at Bussey. Justin Rowe held off several Evesham defenders in the 20th minute but goalkeeper David Adey clutched onto his shot and Dean Brennan was crowded out in the penalty area from Rowe’s 27th minute cross.

Bussey’s safe hands denied Mark Hands after 38 minutes and collected Danny Hodnett’s effort a minute later. With the home defence under pressure, Tom Kemp headed against his own crossbar from Michael Hayden’s 43rd minute chip before Adey made a good save to turn Danks’s drive away for a corner at the other end.

The Yeltz finally took the lead with their first home goal of the season in first half injury time when ROWE glanced home a header from Brennan’s cross.

But previously unbeaten and hard-working Evesham proved a tough nut to crack and came out strongly at the start of the second half. Dwayne Lee headed a 47th minute corner clear and four minutes later Bussey tipped away Hayden’s cross for the first of two Evesham corners. Bussey then kept out a 52nd minute header from defender Joe Clarke before the Robins were rewarded with a deserved 57th minute equaliser when Lennon crossed for HAY to bury the ball from 12 yards.

Caskey replaced injured Tom Bryant on the hour and sent a signal for Halesowen to raise their game. Jay Denny released Brennan down the right after 62 minutes with Rowe meeting his cross, but the ball rebounded off the angle of the bar and post. The Yeltz regained the lead in the 69th minute when Alex Cowley crossed from the right and substitute Jermaine PALMER’s goal-line header was confirmed to have just crossed the line by the referee’s assistant. Palmer’s 83rd minute header was then deflected past Adey off ROWE’s chest to make it 3-1 after Caskey touched a short corner for Cowley to cross.

But with the game seemingly over, the drama was reserved for an extraordinary period of stoppage time. Bussey punched a deep cross clear but then lost his head to react to provocation by throwing a punch at Evesham substitute Michael Batchelor and receive an inevitable red card to reduce the Yeltz to ten men and hand Evesham a penalty kick.

Caskey pulled on the goalkeeper’s jersey to take over between the posts and quite unbelievably pulled off a superb save to his left to keep out Hodnett’s penalty and preserve Halesowen’s two-goal buffer. Super confident Caskey went on to beat away another cross from the left and kept out another shot before the final whistle.
