F.A. Cup 2nd Qualifying Round – Saturday, 27th September 2008

Halesowen Town 3 Gainsborough Trinity 0

Halesowen romped into the FA Cup 3rd qualifying round with a magnificent victory over in-form higher league Blue Square North visitors Gainsborough Trinity. A trio of goalscorers all notched their first goals of the season as the Yeltz played to their exciting potential.

Alex Cowley’s long throw-in in the 3rd minute fell to Aaron Cornwall to strike a volley but goalkeeper Adam Sollitt did well to turn away for a corner. Strike partners Justin Rowe and Jermaine Palmer then combined well two minutes later but Sollitt saved and on 10 minutes Rowe struck across the face of goal.

Halesowen took an 18th minute lead when a clever flick from Rowe set up tireless midfielder Jay Denny and although his shot was blocked, the ball fell for full-back Dean SMITH to net from close range. Lewis McMahon curled a 20-yard effort wide for the visitors after 22 minutes and Palmer’s 31st minute long-range shot was deflected into Sollitt’s arms as Halesowen more than matched Trinity.

The Yeltz went 2-0 ahead in the 34th minute with CORNWALL starting and finishing a fine move by playing a neat exchange of passes with provider Rowe before skipping around Sollitt to slot home from a wide angle.

Despite a double substitution at the interval, there never looked a way back for Gainsborough and Cornwall struck along goal after 52 minutes. Chris Hall hit over the bar from 12 yards on the turn and substitute Ian Ross hit high from a free-kick ten yards outside the area for the visitors. Home goalkeeper Nick Bussey then grabbed the ball on his goal-line under pressure from substitute Simon Bird in the 70th minute but the home defence held firm under the guidance of Michael Briscoe.

With Gainsborough looking well beaten in the final minutes, Darren Caskey’s free-kick on the edge of the area was grabbed by Sollitt and Denny’s header was cleared off the line with four minutes remaining.

Halesowen made it a comfortable and comprehensive 3-0 in the 88th minute when substitute Zema ABBEY turned and his close range shot squirted underneath Sollitt.
