British Gas Business Football League - Premier Division – Saturday, 4th October 2008

Bedford Town 1 Halesowen Town 0

A solitary first-half goal was just enough for battling Bedford to claim all three points in another disappointing away display from Halesowen.

The Yeltz squandered their best chance of the afternoon in only the 3rd minute when Jermaine Palmer was put clear in a one-on-one situation but hesitated and was thwarted by goalkeeper Mike Armitt saving with his legs.

Bedford were forced to reshuffle their defensive pack when central defender Stuart Wall was carried off after pulling up with a hamstring injury after just 15 minutes – the second successive away league game that injury forced the opposition into an early defensive change.

The Eagles then took charge and Dean Smith intercepted a Bedford break before debut goalkeeper Chris Sanna, signed from Colwyn Bay, tipped a long Jamie Gould throw-in over the bar for a corner.

But Sanna was beaten as Bedford took a 20th minute lead following a good build up with Gould and Aaran Cavill doing well down the right allowing Andrew PHILLIPS to finish off by tucking home from ten yards. Bedford should have killed the game and gone further ahead just a minute later when Cavill skied the ball over the bar from a good position after Bedford man-of-the-match Alaa Oujdi squared from the left. Gould and Akin Aladetoun then went close before Halesowen responded in the 32nd minute with Armitt tipping Aaron Cornwall’s header away for a corner from Alex Cowley’s cross. Nine minutes before the interval Gould hit a lovely 25-yard drive inches wide of the angle of Halesowen’s crossbar and post.

After the interval Palmer and Jay Denny combined to go close in the 48th minute and Bedford survived a free-kick after goalkeeper Armitt was penalised outside his area on 56 minutes.

However, the second half petered out with frustrated Halesowen failing to really trouble the resolute home defence, despite three substitutions and the advantage of a strengthening wind on their backs. Cornwall’s deep 66th minute free-kick bounced just wide and Armitt punched clear after Denny won a 74th minute corner.

With five minutes remaining Phillips cut in from the left to drive just wide and the final action deep in injury time saw Cowley win a corner by crossing into the side-netting in front of the sombre visiting fans.
