Birmingham Senior Cup 2nd Round – Tuesday, 7th October 2008

Atherstone Town 2 Halesowen Town 0

Halesowen slipped out of the Birmingham Senior Cup after giving a run-out to their fringe squad members in another away defeat.

Young defender Mark LATHAM sent Atherstone on their way by bravely powering home an 18th minute header on his debut. Tyron Amory then forced the first of three successive corners for the Adders on the half-hour. For Halesowen, Mark Danks latched onto a long ball after 38 minutes but sent his low drive wide and Constantine Melitas struck wide two minutes later. Just before the interval Yeltz goalkeeper James Russell made a good save to keep out a free-kick from Tom Bates after Gavin Hoyte brought down Luke Edwards.

At the start of the second half Danks shaved the outside of the post with his 58th minute free-kick. Amory was then denied by Hoyte’s challenge three minutes later.

Atherstone made it 2-0 in the 61st minute after the visiting defence failed to clear a left-wing free-kick and another defender Tom GUINEY was on hand to convert from 12 yards off goalkeeper Russell. In the final minute a penalty appeal from Edwards was turned down after substitute Leighton Simmonds surged through.
