FA Trophy 1st Qualifying Round – Saturday, 18th October 2008

Durham City 4 Halesowen Town 4

Mark Danks was Halesowen’s hero after completing his hat-trick deep in stoppage time to rescue a replay.

The Yeltz faced a tricky FA Trophy tie against on a 3G synthetic surface against unbeaten Durham after a long trek north to the Arnott Stadium. But Halesowen did themselves no favours when their defensive woes were starkly evident again in conceding an incredible four goals before half-time.

Steven Richardson had two early Durham chances but the visitors took an 8th minute lead when Darren Caskey’s free-kick was headed on by Tom Kemp for DANKS to convert from close range. Prolific Durham, who have netted twenty goals in their last three games, bounced back to equalise just two minutes later when Richardson put Tommy ENGLISH clear to hit a deflected left-foot shot across goalkeeper Chris Sanna. Durham then went ahead on 13 minutes when Adam Johnston’s header rebounded off the post for Calvin SMITH to bundle home as the visiting defence failed to clear.

A 20-yard shot from Danks fell wide on 18 minutes and Caskey’s 20th minute header from Aaron Cornwall’s cross was not quite strong enough before Caskey was booked for dissent in the 25th minute.

City then went 3-1 ahead in the 31st minute with Halesowen’s defence at fault again when Lewis Dodd’s effort dropped for RICHARDSON to fire home. DANKS reduced the arrears in the 35th minute after a neat exchange allowing Jay Denny to cross with the ball just creeping into the net past goalkeeper Craig Turns. But the hosts restored their two-goal margin to make it an amazing 4-2 after only 36 minutes when Richardson put JOHNSTON through to round goalkeeper Sanna with the visiting defence unable to cope again - meaning the Yeltz had conceded ten goals in three games.

Halesowen made a double substitution at the interval to shore up the damage but it was Durham’s Johnston who clipped the crossbar after 51 minutes before Danks’ speculative long-range shot on 65 minutes fell well wide. However, the second-half was much less frenetic until Halesowen grabbed two late goals in a dramatic finale.

Substitute Jermaine Palmer’s 88th minute cross from the left was turned into his own net by Steve CAPPER for an own-goal and a screamer from DANKS into the far corner in the second minute of injury time from the edge of the area made it 4-4 to secure an unlikely Tuesday replay.
