Gloucester City 1 Halesowen Town 2

Halesowen came from behind to make progress back up the table to end Gloucester’s winning streak with a late Justin Rowe winner.  But the game was often niggly with a total of eight yellow cards shown in addition to two penalties at Gloucester’s temporary Corinium home in Cirencester.

The injury hit hosts named veteran Adie Harris on the substitute bench and with Halesowen going forward, Rowe was brought down on the edge of the Gloucester area in the 8th minute by Matt Rose but the ball was cleared after Jay Denny finally hooked the ball into the area. Jermaine Palmer then missed two good chances to give the Yeltz an early lead. Palmer was put clear in the 10th minute but young defender Matt Sysum made an excellent challenge to retrieve the ball. Palmer then somehow put the ball over the bar from point-blank range after a good right-wing cross from Lee Canoville in the 16th minute.

A 20th minute free-kick from Gloucester’s Sysum bounced through to goalkeeper Nick Bussey and on 25 minutes Luke Ballinger helped the ball on for Jack Pitcher to hit just over the bar. After 43 minutes Mark Danks played a short free-kick but Canoville’s shot was well saved by home goalkeeper Kevin Sawyer. At the other end Tom Webb’s cross found its way through to Jack Harris but his shot was blocked. Halesowen won only the second corner of the disappointing first half in the 44th minute, but Aaron Cornwall’s flag kick was again wasted.

The Tigers took the lead in the second minute of first half injury time when Chris Nurse brought down Lee Smith and SMITH stepped up to score from the penalty spot, even though Bussey guessed correctly.

Gloucester forced two corners early in the second half with Pitcher striking the loose ball over the bar. The Yeltz equalised after 52 minutes when DANKS stroked home another penalty after the assistant referee flagged for a foul by Tom Hamblin right on the edge of penalty area, although the home players complained the incident took place outside the area.

Hamblin then made a well timed challenge to rob Palmer in the 54th minute and on the hour a long ball from Tom Kemp almost deceived Sawyer under pressure from Palmer. For Gloucester, Lee Smith skipped past two defenders in the 63rd minute before hitting over the bar and Pitcher was just wide on the turn four minutes later. Substitute Will Morford combined with Pitcher but Bussey juggled the ball to keep out Webb’s 75th minute miss-hit shot. Rowe’s back header fell then fell to Danks but he snatched his shot well wide of the mark with the game looking to be heading for a draw.

Halesowen grabbed the winning goal on 85 minutes when substitute Darren Caskey lofted the ball forward and goalkeeper Sawyer was at fault for failing to claim, leaving the ball to run through to give ROWE the simple task of tapping into an empty net. A minute from time Rowe and Sawyer were involved in a comedy of errors with Sawyer initially slicing the ball before both players slipped over as Rowe attempted to shoot.
