GX Southern League Cup 1st Round – Tuesday, 28th October 2008

Halesowen Town 1 Stourbridge 0

Halesowen notched a narrow victory over neighbours Stourbridge after afternoon snow caused difficult playing conditions in an early taste of Winter.  Both managers made several changes and Gary Hackett handed a full Stourbridge debut to locally based under-18 England international Harry Hambleton.

Halesowen’s Alex Cowley burst forward from midfield in the 13th minute but defender Mark Jones made a good challenge and a 25-yard free-kick from Stourbridge’s Damian Whitcombe was grasped by home goalkeeper Nick Bussey four minutes later. Injured Cowley was then replaced by Darren Caskey in the 18th minute and 40-year old Stourbridge veteran Jon Ford replaced Whitcombe in the 21st minute. On 26 minutes Stourbridge goalkeeper Lewis Solly held onto a shot from Constantine Melitas and Ross Collins poked just wide after Michael Briscoe sliced behind his own goal for a 29th minute Stourbridge corner.

After the interval Zema Abbey nodded just wide from Jack Allward’s cross before both managers made a number of substitutions. ABBEY then claimed the winning goal by turning to fire past Solly on the hour after Dean Smith played the ball in from the right. Hilmi Michi set up Allward to cross along the face of goal four minutes later and three players then received yellow cards in a midfield melee after a tussle between Chris Nurse and Gavin Winsper. Home substitutes Jermaine Palmer and Aaron Cornwall combined well for Abbey to strike wide in the 79th minute as the Yeltz pressed for a second goal.

The Glassboys created little in the second period although a 20-yard effort from David Bridgwater flew just wide in the 84th minute as Halesowen kept their first clean sheet in eight outings.
