Banbury United 2 Halesowen Town 1

Halesowen slumped to a disappointed defeat at the Spencer Stadium and were fortunate to still be in the game at the interval after lowly Banbury missed a host of first-half chances.

Banbury went close as early as the 3rd minute when Lee Canoville lost out and the ball was played through to Scott Bridges but goalkeeper Nick Bussey made a good fingertip save. The Yeltz defence was opened up again in the 7th minute but Nicky Gordon flicked agonisingly wide past Bussey. Busy Bussey made a full length fingertip save to divert a header from former Yeltz forward Howard Forinton away for a 10th minute corner and Gordon then hooked wide on 15 minutes. Halesowen eventually featured with Banbury man-of-the-match Luke Bennett heading clear Canoville’s 22nd minute cross and Richard Groves tidied up the loose ball on his home debut. Mark Danks then hit tamely at Wheeler in the 24th minute.

As the one-way traffic continued, Ollie Stanbridge struck a good chance over the bar when free in the penalty area after 29 minutes and Bussey made a superb save when Forinton looked certain to score with a placed shot in the 31st minute.

Halesowen made a better start to the second half by forcing three consecutive corners and Wheeler then collected a long range effort from Danks. But the Puritans took a deserved 60th minute lead with Forinton heading on a deep free-kick for SCOTT BRIDGES to fire past Bussey. Forinton then charged down a 62nd minute clearance from Bussey with the loose ball dropping away for a goal-kick.

Halesowen equalised in their first meaningful chance when Darren CASKEY converted with a delightful chip from a direct 65th minute free-kick on the edge of the Banbury area. But Banbury restored their lead in the 71st minute when GORDON stroked home from the penalty spot after Stanbridge was tripped by Jack Allward.

Late on, a good Halesowen move saw Danks receive the ball from the right but goalkeeper Wheeler was grateful to trap Danks’ shot beneath his body.
