Hitchin Town 0 Halesowen Town 1

Halesowen Town returned to winning ways in the league with a narrow victory against 9 man Hitchin at Pilot Field.

The Yeltz dominated the early exchanges and Aaron Cornwall's early 20 yard free kick forced an early save by Martin Bennett, while Jermaine Palmer failed to make contact with the ball from close range from Cornwall's cross, with the goal gaping.

Halesowen managed to make their superiority count on 21 minutes, when they took the lead. Cornwall and Bennett both challenged for the ball in the penalty area, which Cornwall won with his back to goal. CORNWALL then turned and fired home from close range, with Bennett stranded from the earlier challenge.

Halesowen could have doubled their advantage soon after, with Mark Danks forcing Bennett into another save on 30 minutes. Hitchin finally exerted some pressure on the Halesowen goal near the end of the first half, with Daniel Charge forcing a save from Yeltz goalkeeper Nick Bussey.

The home side showed signs of improvement in the second half and should have equalised on 65 minutes. Mark E'Beyer got in behind the Halesowen defence, but Bussey stood firm and made a great save to preserve Halesowen's lead.

Hitchin's task of getting an equaliser got harder on 69 minutes, when right back Tom Pepper was sent off for picking up two yellow cards with his second for deliberate handball. Halesowen failed to make the extra man count, with Cornwall coming the closest to doubling their advantage, but his shot from the angle was well saved by Bennett.

The Yeltz had to survive some late Hitchin pressure, but the game boiled over late on when E'Beyer and Halesowen captain Michael Briscoe were involved in a minor altercation, with both players being booked, but E'Beyer was sent off for picking up his second caution, reducing Hitchin to nine men by the end.
