British Gas Business Football League - Premier Division – Tuesday, 18th November 2008

Halesowen Town 2 Mangotsfield United 0

Halesowen cruised to victory but could have added many more than their two early goals after totally dominating, helped by a busy and energetic debut from new Portuguese signing Rueben Gouveia.

In a lively start, Gouveia showed his intentions by cutting in from the right to shoot just wide after only three minutes. Jay Denny’s 6th minute shot was then collected by goalkeeper Josh Clapham and Matt Townley headed Nuno Barreto’s cross clear two minutes later.

Halesowen took an 11th minute lead when Barreto won a right wing corner and Aaron Cornwall’s delivery was only partly cleared to fall for Chris NURSE to hit home his first Halesowen goal through a crowded defence from 10 yards. Denny’s cross was then headed behind by Townley and CORNWALL made it 2-0 directly from the resulting 15th minute corner as the ball eluded the defence to find its way into the far corner.

In continuing one-way traffic, a 21st minute Cornwall corner came out to Gavin Hoyte and his fierce shot was blocked, but only after flooring Ellis Wilmot. Clapham collected Michael Briscoe’s header under his crossbar from Cornwall’s 39th minute corner and seconds before the interval Zema Abbey laid the ball off for Nurse to put Gouveia clear - but his firm effort was diverted away for yet another corner.

After a quiet start to the second half, Abbey set up Gouveia to make a good turn and strike at Clapham. Mangotsfield then kept out another two corners in the 62nd minute after Cornwall’s 25-yard shot was deflected wide. Denny was unlucky to see his well struck 20-yard volley strike the base of the post from Cornwall’s 72nd minute cross and substitute Mark Danks volleyed into the side-netting a minute later.

Home goalkeeper Nick Bussey was redundant until the visitors won an 80th minute corner with the Yeltz defence a little slow to clear as Wilmot delivered two crosses and Marcus Duharty eventually glanced a header wide. Bussey then saved from substitute James Pilling on the turn a minute later before holding onto an 83rd minute corner.

Halesowen couldn’t find the extra goals that their superiority deserved and in the 88th minute Danks broke free but could only watch in amazement as his fierce shot ricocheted back off the post with Clapham well beaten.
