GX Southern League Cup 2nd Round – Tuesday, 25th November 2008

Bedworth United 0 Halesowen Town 2

Halesowen displayed their strength in depth to overcome the Greenbacks and move into the last 16 of the GX League Cup competition.

In early play Jermaine Palmer’s 20th minute header almost dipped under goalkeeper Andrew Kemp’s crossbar from Aaron Cornwall’s corner and Palmer then side-stepped his marker to shoot at Kemp three minutes later.

Bedworth’s Danny Edmond played the ball around Gavin Hoyte but his fierce 32nd minute shot brought a good save from Nick Bussey. Hoyte then blocked from Patrick Connolley and Cornwall’s 36th minute free-kick earned a corner for Halesowen at the other end. For Bedworth, Ben Twigger played a delightful 37th minute chip to put Kyle King into a one-on-one with Bussey but he wasted the chance and Bussey grabbed another weak effort from the same player a couple of minutes later. Alex Cowley gave another impressive performance in midfield and his 25-yard effort fell just wide before Kemp saved from Erik Hummel at the end of a flowing Halesowen move just before half-time.

The Yeltz continued to play well on a frosty evening and went ahead on 51 minutes as Dean Smith crossed for Danny CAMPBELL to head home his first Halesowen goal. Two minutes later, Hoyte did well to preserve the clean sheet by back-tracking to divert the ball wide from Edmond who was in the clear. With Halesowen seeking further goals, Campbell struck high over the bar after 64 minutes from Hummel’s cross and Palmer hammered a loose ball over the bar in the 68th minute after Kemp dropped a free-kick.

Bussey made a good save at the foot of his post after 70 minutes and substitute Mark Danks was then just wide with a good 71st minute shot. After 75 minutes Edmond fired over the Halesowen bar from a good position and Campbell provided a good cross along the Bedworth goal.

Halesowen finally made it 2-0 in the second minute of stoppage time after an error in an attempted clearance by goalkeeper Kemp allowed Campbell to win the ball and gave PALMER the simple task of rolling into an empty net.
