Worcestershire Senior Cup 2nd Round – Tuesday, 9th December 2008

Halesowen Town 5 Stourport Swifts 0

Halesowen made light work of progressing in the Worcestershire Senior Cup with a five goal victory over lower league Stourport.

The Swifts were first on the attack on a frosty Grove evening and in the 8th minute Scott Morris saw his header turned away by goalkeeper Nick Bussey with Morris striking over the bar after the ball was played back in from the left.

But Halesowen soon stamped their authority on the game with two quick goals. Mark DANKS cut in from the left to fire home the first goal into the bottom corner of the net on 12 minutes. Ruben Gouveia’s dipping shot then fell just over the bar but GOUVEIA made it 2-0 in the 19th minute with a flashing header from Danks’s cross from the left. With the Yeltz in charge, Nuno Barreto poked just wide after 26 minutes and Danks’s drive was just wide from 20 yards following a corner on the half-hour.

Halesowen cruised into a 3-0 lead in the 36th minute when Gouveia crossed from the right and DANKS was first to the ball to force home under pressure from Craig Williams. Darren CASKEY added a beautiful fourth goal by placing a direct free-kick on the edge of the area beyond bemused goalkeeper Paul Evans in the 38th minute.

Into the second half, Stourport’s Morris struck weakly at Bussey after 53 minutes but with Halesowen still on top, Alex Cowley put Danks through in a one-against-one with goalkeeper Evans, but the chance was lost. The visiting defence was wide open again on the hour when Danks crossed to Aaron Cornwall but he struck against a defender in front of goal. Jermaine Palmer’s shot was then deflected on top of the net to earn Halesowen a 62nd minute corner before Halesowen goalkeeper Bussey parried away a lob from Christopher Cornes in the 75th minute.

Swifts goalkeeper Evans got the better of Palmer to claim the ball in another one-on-one situation in the 80th minute but Halesowen made it a convincing 5-0 when BARRETO volleyed home from the edge of the six-yard box following Cornwall’s 81st minute cross.
