Clevedon Town 1 Halesowen Town 2

Jay Denny’s delightful double earned maximum points for Halesowen in an impressive recovery from being a goal behind at the interval.

After a slow start to the game on a sticky surface, Justin Rowe marked his return from injury by shooting at goalkeeper Danny Greaves from Aaron Cornwall’s 10th minute cross. Darren Caskey’s 18th minute free-kick was nodded just wide by Nuno Barreto and Barreto drove a loose ball wide from Caskey’s corner three minutes later. Ruben Gouveia then cut in from the right but his effort fell wide after 26 minutes. Clevedon’s Lewis Powell struck a 25-yard free-kick high over the Halesowen bar on the half-hour mark.

Despite Halesowen’s dominance, it was the Seasiders who opened the scoring with their first meaningful attack when Tom Billing headed on a corner for Lewis POWELL to fire home from six yards in the 32nd minute. Jake Harris then headed just wide and Harris lobbed a loose ball just over the bar after debutant Yeltz goalkeeper Danny Ireland was challenged for a cross by Billing in the 49th minute.

Halesowen stuck to their task and stepped up a gear to play some quality, neat football in the second period and were rewarded with a 56th minute equaliser when DENNY calmly slotted into the bottom corner after Cornwall swung over a cross from the left. Rowe went close in the 59th minute but was forced wide by goalkeeper Greaves and Michael Briscoe’s deep 62nd minute free-kick was tipped over the bar by back-pedalling Greaves three minutes later.

DENNY deservedly won the game by curling into the top corner from the edge of the area at the end of a superb 80th minute move. Denny’s eye for goal saw him almost complete a hat-trick but his long-range 83rd minute attempt was expertly pushed away for a corner by Greaves. Greaves then kept out a deflected 85th minute shot from Cornwall as Halesowen claimed the three points that their superiority warranted.
